There is some debate about whether outlining a novel is a good thing or if it stifles the creative process. Some writers live by the outline while others like the raw feeling of just writing with no plan in place. I am not going to debate the pros or cons of either method. I think you should do what works for you and ignore everyone else. After all, it is your novel and your writing process.
For the purpose of this post, we are looking at methods of outlining your novel. There are so many methods it can be hard to whittle your way through them to find the method that works best for you. I am not claiming to know the best method. I do not and could not because I am not you. Makes sense right?
What I can do is point you to some good places to get help outlining your novel. The posts I list here are some that I have found helpful. You will have to adapt them to fit your writing process or take bits and pieces from several methods and develop your own outlining process. It is important to develop your own method, but examining other writer’s methods is a great way to get started.
Below are some great novel outlining tutorials, guides and plans- some even include worksheets.
Some of these methods may seem simple and others might seem like more work than writing the novel. So mix and match or just read over them and look for hints or paths that suit your style.
Do you have a novel outlining method that works well for you or a link to one? Tell me about it in the comments.
